  • For Forest Species
  • 6% UVB for the synthesis of vitamin D3
  • 30% UVA
  • Produces excellent natural colours
  • 200%+ more visible light than equivalent length D3 T8 lamp (un-reflected)
  • 80% more UVB than equivalent length T8 lamp (un-reflected)

The Benefits of T5 Technology

  • Smaller diameter lamp – 5/8 of an inch (16mm) compared to 1” (26mm)
  • Flicker free – all T5 lamps operate on efficient, high frequency ballasts
  • High output T5 lamps are especially useful for captive reptiles. The extra power that these lamps provide will help a keeper to generate a good UV gradient and provide safe basking quantities of UV over a much wider and deeper area.

The ability of reptiles to turn sunlight into vitamins has been one of the most important and life enhancing discoveries in herpeticulture.

Reptiles use the U.V.B wavelength in what is called the D3 cycle. This is the practice of reptiles basking in sunlight and using U.V.B to create vitamin D3 among many other chemical and hormonal changes in the blood stream. Light has to be emitted at 297nms to provide the optimum wavelength for D3 synthesis. Vitamin D3 is essential to reptiles as it acts as a catalyst to calcium absorption, among many other vitamin and hormonal changes in the body. Reptiles also use U.V.A primarily in the visual field. Reptiles are known to be tetra chromatic. This simply means they use U.V.A to view the world.

In late 2010 Arcadia launched the first complete range of high output, high UVB T5 reptile lamps in both 6% and 12% U.V.B. High output T5 represents a huge jump forward in the technology associated with the keeping  and breeding captive reptiles. Huge volumes of light and U.V will have a direct effect on the animation and health of a captive reptile, even stopping brumation in some species. Using an electronic control system high output T5 lamps emit a massive 2-3 times more light and usable U.V when used with the correct reflector and compared with the relative Arcadia T8 tube. These lamps represent the very latest and safest technology available. We know that lamps running via a magnetic control system have what is known as a flicker factor. This is a shimmer in the light output at around 50HRTZ. These high output, high frequency control systems are “flicker free” and vastly better for reptile vision.

The distance light has to travel between lamp to animal makes a huge difference in the power available to the animal and its ability to complete the D3 cycle properly. Providing the correct environment is one of the most vital parts of keeping reptiles happy and healthy. We must all strive to provide the very best we can. High output, High UVB lamps dramatically increase the amount of usable UVB to the animal and are especially useful for illuminating large terrestrial enclosures.

Product Safety

Lamps can be fragile pieces of equipment. Please follow the following steps to ensure the safe fitting and use of fluorescent lamps.

At either end of a fluorescent lamp you will see two brass coloured connection pins. These are the electrodes that take energy from the controller to start and run the lamp. These are quite fragile by nature. It is imperative that both pins are safely located into the pin sockets inside the lamp holder before the lamp is pressed into place. Failure to line the pins up correctly will cause the pins to bend and snap and break through the lamp cap rendering the lamp unusable.
The Ultra-seal lamp ring must be unscrewed from the lamp holder and placed over the lamp prior to fitting and only re-seated onto the lamp holder when you are sure that the lamp pins are seated correctly. High Output T5 lamp leads must be fully unwound also or you may notice lamp flickering or beaks in illumination. You can also use a very small amount of a substance like Vaseline to lubricate the lamp ring and so stop it fusing to the lamp after long periods of heat. After cooling lamps can be wiped clean with a damp cloth once every two weeks or so to remove any dust build up from the lamp, this in turn will help to maintain the lamps full output. The all important reflector should also be wiped clean at the same time.
